thinking some; adding a handler is not useful when
connecting PHP as a module would it ?
adding handler would work if I install PHP as a
script engine, which though might be an option guess.

Why not install PHP 5? PHP
4 is old news. Also, it sounds like you need to include a
AddHandler in your apache config file so your pages know how to parse
PHP code.
