Oooooo! This is a wonderful idea so far - keeping track of the status of
allocations like this solves a lot of problems, especially with regards to the
fact this actually seems to make it possible for us to have much better
handling of payload failures in drivers - especially in situations like
suspend/resume. The naming changes here are awesome too.

I think this patch is good as far as I can tell review-wise! I haven't been
able to test it quite yet but I'll do it asap.
