Have you tried treating it as a 18i8 2nd Gen device first, at least?

FWIW, I had adapted Geoffrey's work as a DKMS module:

https://github.com/HinTak/sound-usb-dkms

But you'll still need to be running as recent as a 5.2.x release kernel to use it. It just makes it easier to play with the code without recompiling the whole kernel. HTH. 3.x and 4.x is definitely way too old!
