Thank you for your reply.
I've just plugged in the device - without the usb extension cable that I
used previously - and it works fine. It seems I was trying with a USB 1.0
extension cable.
Terribly sorry for the noise, at least a good lesson for me and eventually
for some future readers.

ALSA rocks.
