Clemens,

Thanks for your response.  My speakers are on order and should be in 
towards end of week.

Before I try speaker-test however,  I want to understand what is going 
on.  When I start jack with qjackctl, the connect tab shows payback_1 
and playback_2.  I assume this is stereo.  My headphones when connected 
to the sound card seem to be playing stereo.  When I select the setup 
tab and change the Output Channels to 4 (or 8), qjackctl won't start.  
How do I set up jack so that I can see playback_1, playback_2, 
playback_3 and playback_4?  What am I missing?  Is the module for the 
sound card deficient or do I need to set some config files?  Any 
further guidance would be much appreciated.
