The ALSA kernel API hasn't been changed much for years.  So, I don't
know what kind of regression you have regarding the driver.

Do you keep the same alsa-lib binary but change only the kernel?

Depends.

Yes, likely.  2.6.10 and 2.6.20 are quite different.  The ALSA
kconfigs haven't much changed but many other are.
