It look like automake 1.7.8 do not support that change in

After revert back to previous revision (Makefile.am)

./cvscompile is OK for /cvs/alsa-lib

Please note that there is no RPM upgrade of automake available for FC1.

I don't think that this will be fixed.  FC1 is old.
