Summary: Sound card snd-hda-intel emits NO sound
Description:
Hi

I was merrily running Fedora Core 4 and after upgrading the kernel to
2.6.16 my sound no longer worked under Linux (it works under Windows).
After a lot of battling I figured I may as well upgrade to FC5 now. A
clean install, out of the box, and the sound STILL did not work. I've
applied every available patch to date and no luck. Tonight I installed
the Alsa 1.0.11 driver, lib and util tarballs -- all installed
successfully -- but there is STILL no sound produced.

Everything LOOKS normal. There are no errors that I can detect. In the X
and console versions of Alsamixer I have ALL the devices displayed and
unmuted with the volumes at max. I've removed the sound lines from
modprobe.conf and am running with alsasound and that didn't help either --
even though it says the driver has been loaded.

FYI, the OSS Volume control calls it a Realtek ALC260. lspci refers to it
as Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller
(rev 01).

Please help.

I have been having the same problem.

I applied the patch and installed the new alsa driver:

$ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.11.
Compiled on May 12 2006 for kernel 2.6.16-1.2111_FC5smp (SMP).

$ cat /etc/modprobe.conf
alias eth0 tg3
alias scsi_hostadapter ata_piix
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=0
remove snd-hda-intel { /usr/sbin/alsactl store 0 >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; };
/sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-hda-intel

The model doesn't get set:

$ cat /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/*
N
<NULL>
0
<NULL>
0
-1
N

But I do get sound!

I'd been having a similar issue here - again with the HP dc7600 small form
factor desktop PC.

I'm running gentoo, the kernel is 2.6.16-gentoo-r9 (latest in portage at
time of writing). I've been unable to get any sound at all from the kernel
driver for intel-hda, and the alsa-driver that's current in portage was
similarly unsuccessful.

I've now got it working by downloading alsa-driver version 1.0.11rc5 and
installing it manually.

/etc/modules.d/alsa looks like this :
alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.

# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.11 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

options snd-hda-intel model=auto index=0 position_fix=1
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-pcm-oss dsp_map=0

lcpci -nv for the sound portion looks like this :
00:1b.0 0403: 8086:27d8 (rev 01)
        Subsystem: 103c:3011
        Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 217
        Memory at e04c0000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
        Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
        Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: 64bit+ Queue=0/0
Enable-
        Capabilities: [70] Express Unknown type IRQ 0
        Capabilities: [100] Virtual Channel
        Capabilities: [130] Unknown (5)

Hope this helps - let me know if there's anything else I need to report :)
