Complaints of grounded flights and stranded passengers began swirling on Twitter in the early afternoon. United's official Twitter account confirmed the system malfunction at about 2 p.m. and promised updates soon. "A network outage is affecting our airports and United.com functions. We are working to resolve the issue and minimize any impact to our operations," said United spokeswoman Mary Ryan in a statement sent to the Post.
