Re: B747-200 High Density

I don't believe there was ever a high-density version of the 747-200,
and if there had been, it would not have been possible to use it on a
long-range route. The 747-100SR (short range) was operated by ANA
with 456 pax on domestic routes, and with up to 550 pax by JAL. (One
was lost in an accident in 1985, killing 520 out of 524 aboard, still
the worst single-plane accident in history. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Airlines_Flight_123
  .)

There was also a SR version of the 747-300, and JAL operated a 563-pax
version (Wikipedia says "more than 600", but I'm dubious) on routes
from Tokyo to Okinawa and some other Asian and island destinations.

I was on a JAL flight from Osaka to Tokyo on a 747SR in 1985, and it
was amazing how quickly they could load the plane. They used all the
doors on the left side. You lined up in front of the jetway portal
depending on your seat/row, and then, like a train, they flashed a
"BOARDING" light which activated the gates, which you put your ticket
in like a subway/metro ticket, using the mag strip, and turnstile
gates opened for each passenger like a train. 500+ pax in just a few
minutes - no fuss, no crowding, no arguments, everybody just go on,
sat down, and they closed the doors and we left.
