The pilot said the airplane plummeted 50 to 100 feet after its engine failed shortly after takeoff at about 11:45 a.m., according to Morgan County Sheriff Jim Crone. The airplane=92s single front wheel apparently broke free upon impact, and the plane skidded to a stop on its nose and rear two wheels. =93He had some momentum,=94 said airport Manager Kyle Scott. Pilot Daniel Fanning, 38, of Frederick and passenger Mark Thomas, 42, of Broomfield were taken to Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan, Crone said. Fanning was treated and released, and Thomas was treated and transferred to Avista Hospital in Louisville. =93They didn=92t seem to have any obvious significant injury,=94 he said Su= nday. Scott said he was on his lunch break during the crash, but the two men were waiting outside the airplane when help arrived. The men had flown into Fort Morgan Saturday morning for breakfast, he said. The airport resumed operations as normal at about 2:30 p.m., after the plane had been removed and the runway cleared. Scott said the crash significantly damaged the Zenith Zenair airplane, which was likely assembled from a kit. =93It=92s a home-built airplane, so it=92s hard to say that it=92s totaled = by value,=94 he said. =93But I would say it=92s totaled.=94 Contact Jesse Chaney at farm@xxxxxxxxxxxx Times News Editor John La Porte contributed to this report.
