I really enjoyed this "trip down nightmare lane". 

I feel Boyd's comments about Pro Air neglected one important piece of information: As much as anything, Pro Air failed because the neighborhood around Detroit City Airport has been a bombed out wasteland ever since Chrysler closed their nearby Lynch Road Assembly Plant (home of the Plymouth Fury!) in the early 1980s. Although DET is centrally located, I think travellers were reluctant to fly Pro Air because they were worried about having their cars stolen, or being assaulted while they were walking through the airport parking lots.
