The pilot of a small banner-towing plane died this morning when the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff at Camarillo Airport, the Ventura County Fire Department reported.

Neither the identity nor the age of the pilot was immediately released, and it may take several days before authorities determine the cause of the crash, said Capt. Ron Oatman.

Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were dispatched to the scene, as was the county coroner's office, said Oatman.

The Piper Cub went down shortly after takeoff at about 9:30 a.m., crashing in a little-used area of the airport about 50 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Oatman said the plane crashed on an old runway where advertising planes pick up and drop off the banners they fly to tout events and products.

The airport was operating normally, with primarily recreational flights in the middle of the busy holiday weekend.

It was the third crash, and the second involving a banner-towing aircraft, at Camarillo Airport this summer. Last month, a plane made an emergency landing at the site. The plane landed upside down, but the pilot escaped with minimal injuries.

A student pilot on his first solo flight died in a crash there July 13. John McKittrick, 42, had been practicing takeoffs and landings in the World War II-era P-51D Mustang when the plane went down, said FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.

In a statement after the latest crash, Gregor said the Piper Cub "nosed over" when it was trying to pick up an advertising banner.
