Passenger jet crashes on take-off in Kyrgzstan

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - A passenger jet carrying at least 83 people to Iran c=
rashed Sunday near the main airport in Kyrgyzstan, Kyrgyz and U.S. official=
s said. Russia's RIA-Novosti news agency quoted a Kyrgyz civil aviation off=
icial as saying 25 people survived.

The Boeing 737 crashed near the Bishkek airport, Maj. Damian Pickart, publi=
c affairs officer for the Manas U.S. air base told The Associated Press. Th=
e U.S. air base is at Bishkek's airport. Pickart said there were 83 people =
aboard.

An airport official said the crash occurred after the crew reported a techn=
ical problem on board about 10 minutes into the flight to Tehran, Iran, and=
 that the plane was returning to the airport. The official said she was not=
 authorized to give her name.

Kyrgyz Interior Minister Maldomusa Kongatiyev told the AP there were seven =
crew members on board in addition to the 83 passengers. He said the plane w=
ent down 6 miles from the airport.

Russia's Interfax news agency quoted Kyrgyz Emergency Situations Minister K=
amchibek Tashiyev as saying the plane crashed about 3 miles from the airpor=
t and had 123 people on board.

he unidentified Kyrgyz civil aviation official quoted by RIA-Novosti said t=
here were more than 120 abroad and that 25 survived. It said nine had been =
taken to hospitals.

Pickart said the U.S. base sent ambulances and firefighting equipment in re=
sponse to a Kyrgyz request for help.

The airport official said the plane belonged to Itek Air, a Kyrgyz company,=
 but was operated by Iran Aseman Airlines. Interfax said the plane was head=
ed to Mashhad in northeastern Iran.

Itek Air has been banned from operating in the airspace of the European Uni=
on, according to a list published by the EU July 24.=20
