FARNBOROUGH, England Verifying software in the 787 Dreamliners brake control system is the latest problem holding back Boeing from launching the first test flight of its new plane, the programs chief said Tuesday. Skip to next paragraph The first of the 787s, which was originally meant to fly last summer, has been held back by three major production delays because of parts shortages and incomplete work from suppliers arriving at its assembly plant near Seattle. The plane is still on track for a first flight in the fourth quarter in line with the last schedule announced in April but the newest hitch in the timetable is the brakes, Patrick Shanahan, general manager of the 787 program, said at a briefing at Farnborough Airshow on Tuesday. Specifically, there have been delays getting the software in the planes brake control system verified to meet stringent certification requirements, said Mr. Shanahan, who has led the 787 program since October last year. The work on the software is being done by the Crane Company, which was subcontracted by General Electrics Smiths aerospace unit. Its not that the brakes dont work, its the traceability of the software, Mr. Shanahan said, explaining that Crane had to go back and rewrite certain parts of the brake control software to verify it for the certification process. Im confident it will be done, he said.
