Airline seeks money for Visalia and Merced flights

   (06-17) 11:54 PDT Visalia, CA (AP) --
An airline hoping to serve the San Joaquin Valley cities of Visalia and
Merced is seeking more federal money to get its service off the ground.
Wyoming-based Great Lakes Aviation was the only company to submit a bid =
by
Friday's deadline for a federally subsidized contract to serve the rural
communities.
The cities have been left without an airline since Air Midwest halted
flights to Las Vegas at the end of May.
The U.S. Department of Transportation originally chose Great Lakes as the
replacement carrier in October.
But the company said skyrocketing fuel prices meant the $1.8 million in
federal subsidies offered would not be enough to make the service
profitable.
The company's new bid seeks $3 million in federal money to start flights
from both towns to either Las Vegas or Ontario, Calif.
