Having waded through some 400 comments on the NYT story, I really don't see this sticking. There is just going to be too much push back from the flying public. I think it may have been a trial ballon to see how far they could push the a la carte pricing thing. Not a great idea from a legacy carrier that has has so many service disruptions lately. If they do go through with it, I hope the irate pax will remember the agent on the other side of the counter had no say in the policy. But I bet that won't happen. But, you really can't blame any airline for not going gently into that good night.
