But Ms Kimberly Loong ended up stranded at Changi Airport instead. Bad weather in Jakarta had led to the city's Soekarno-Hatta airport being closed. According to a report in Kompas.com, the airport was closed due to low visibility, heavy rain and floods. Corporate communications manager Evelyn Khoo, who is in her 30s, said Ms Loong, her boss, left for Jakarta on a Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight which left Changi Airport at 10am. Ms Khoo said: 'But later Ms Loong called me to say that her flight - SQ956 - was unable to land in Jakarta due to bad weather conditions. 'The plane then returned to Singapore. When I called her at 2pm, I learnt that she was still in the aircraft.' An SIA spokesman said three Jakarta-bound flights, SQ 954, SQ 956 and SQ 958, were affected by bad weather at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, which led to the airport's runway being closed yesterday afternoon. She said all three flights were unable to land at the airport. The flights were scheduled to leave Singapore for Jakarta at 9.30am, 10.35am and 12.25pm respectively. The spokesman said: 'The runway has been flooded and the flights have either been turned back to Singapore or have not departed. 'All the passengers have left the planes and are waiting at the airport. We have made arrangements to give them food vouchers and will arrange accommodation for them if needed.' DIVERTED The spokesman added that no SIA flights were diverted to other Indonesian cities. A Garuda Indonesia spokesman said that the bad weather had prevented their planes from flying to and from Jakarta. Kompas.com reported that the airport closure had affected 152 flights - 56 international arrivals, 92 domestic flights and four international departures. It was reported that some of the domestic flights were diverted to Palembang, Semarang and Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in Jakarta. Flights scheduled to leave Yogyakarta for Jakarta in the morning were still at the city's Adisutjipto Airport at 2.30pm western Indonesian time (3.30 pm Singapore time). According to a statement from SIA, the runway at Soekarno-Hatta airport was re-opened at 4.30pm Singapore time. The SIA spokesman said that to minimize inconvenience to the affected passengers, the passengers of SQ 954 would join those of SQ 956. She said SQ 956 would be operated by a Boeing 747 aircraft to accommodate the high passenger load, and was scheduled to depart Singapore at 5.30pm, subject to changes. The spokesman said that SQ 958 was scheduled to leave Singapore for Jakarta at 5.15pm. The spokesman mentioned that both flights left on time and had landed in Jakarta. The floods did not spare the Indonesian president too. Reuters reported that MrSusilo Bambang Yudhoyono was forced to abandon his Mercedes Benz after it got stuck in a flooded main road near the presidential palace. The president's security escort had to usher Mr Yudhoyono into a sports utility vehicle. Yesterday's heavy rains, said to be the worst in 15 years, triggered landslides and floods across Indonesia. Cars were stranded on roads as people waded through knee-deep murky water in Jakarta, home to around 14 million people. This year's flood victims were mainly from Java, Sulawesi islands and Aceh. It is believed that 12 people have been killed so far. The Jakarta Post reported that rain-triggered flash floods claimed three lives and forced thousands from their homes in the Pasuruan regency in East Java. Pasuruan Regent Jusbakir Aljufri said widespread flooding occurred after the three main rivers in the regency burst their banks following heavy rain from Wednesday evening. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals?
