The council gave unanimous approval Wednesday to the $1.2 billion construction project. The project will be funded by the fees airlines pay to use the airport a= nd should be completed by 2012. The gates will be the first built at the airport since the early 1980s. They will be part of a new building that passengers will reach by an underground people mover from the Tom Bradley International Terminal. All the gates will be able to accommodate the new, larger jetliners. "This sends a message to the airline industry that we want a world-class airport," Councilwoman Janice Hahn said.
