Boca Airport to kick off noise-reduction program at
nearby homes

Noise from the Boca Raton Airport has long been an
aggravation for those living near the airfield.

The Boca Raton Airport Authority is nearly ready to
offer homeowners who live within eligible areas a new
program to reduce the impact of that noise.

Airport Manager Ken Day said officials expect to
approach the Airport Authority in July for permission
to advertise bids for the QuieterHome Program, funded
through grants from state and federal agencies.

?The Boca Raton Airport Authority is offering this
program at no cost to participating homeowners,? he
said.

Work should begin by the end of the year, said the
airport manager.

Ten homes to start

The initial phase of the pilot program will encompass
10 homes, and will enable the program team from C&S
Engineers Inc. ? which will perform the work -- to
define the design and construction process.

The second phase of the program will involve another
35 homes in the areas of highest aircraft noise
exposure.

He said the 10 homes are built of different materials
to better judge the impact of the noise-deadening
work.

The Federal Aviation Administration establishes
guidelines to reduce the interior noise levels in the
affected homes. The target noise level for the
interior of living areas in a home is 45 decibels.

The goal of the program is to reduce the noise level
in a house by at least five decibels through the use
of sound insulation treatments, said Day.

Doors and window

The work to be done includes door and window
treatments. Houses that are part of the program will
get impact glass ? which can also help during
hurricanes.

Residential structures within the FAA-approved 65
decibel day-night noise level contours may be eligible
to participate in the sound insulation program. Day
said the houses involved in Phase I of the program
have already been selected.

The pilot phase of the project is estimated to cost
about $1.2 million, said Day. Ninety-five percent of
the funding comes from the FAA. An additional 2.5
percent is from the Florida Department of
Transportation and the final 2.5 percent is from the
Airport Authority, which gets its revenue from airport
tenants.

Day said homeowners with questions about the program
can contact C&S at 561-544-8077.
