Firefighters respond to airport emergency

Evansville fire and rescue crews responded to a distress call from a plane
that made an emergency landing at Evansville Regional Airport on Wednesday
afternoon.

According to airport spokesman Nelson Bailes, the plane, a Delta connector
flight carrying passengers from St. Louis to Cincinnati, had 54 people
aboard.

The pilot declared an emergency after the cockpit began filling wth smoke
and sought permission to land in Evansville, Bailes said.

The plane landed safely shortly after 5:30 p.m. Bailes said the passengers
and crew all got off the plane safely and efforts were underway to arrange
for another flight to take the passengers on to Cincinnati.

Bailes said officials were still investigating what caused the smoke in
the cockpit.
