Kennedy International Airport and Long Beach Airport outside Los Angeles on Jan. 4, providing the city with a new discount carrier. New York-based JetBlue said it will offer up to five daily flights to New York and up to two daily flights to Long Beach. The carrier has been eyeing the possibility of flights out of Chicago for years, preferring O'Hare instead of Midway Airport where low-fare rival Southwest Airlines is entrenched. United Airlines had opposed its application to serve O'Hare, one of its main hubs. JetBlue flies a fleet of Airbus 320 and Embraer 190 aircraft. The six-year-old airline has gained a niche by offering low prices, a single class of service and such amenities as a personal TV screen at every seat. O'Hare will be its 50th destination. "Chicago has consistently ranked No. 1 on our customers' wish list of JetBlue destinations for a long time, and we are happy to bring our award-winning service and low service to the Second City," said JetBlue CEO and founder David Neeleman. -------------------------------------------= --------------------------- Copyright 2006 AP
