The demonstration, set for Tuesday at Philadelphia International Airport, i= s intended to convince the public and the airline that the pilots had a han= d in helping the carrier achieve profits in the first two quarters of 2006,= the union said. "We're asking for the company to treat us fairly and to recognize our commi= tment," said Arnie Gentile, a US Air pilot and spokesman for the Air Line P= ilots Association (ALPA). US Air, formed last year from a merger of America West Airlines and the for= mer US Airways, is negotiating a contract to cover pilots from both airline= s. Gentile said the demonstration would be conducted by ALPA leaders represent= ing pilots who were employed by the former US Air. The airline was saved fr= om likely liquidation in 2005 by a merger with America West, which adopted = the US Air name. ALPA said that during two bankruptcies prior to the merger US Air pilots sa= crificed $6.8 billion in concessions. Now that the merged airline is profit= able, management should recognize the pilots' contribution, Gentile said. "There's no question that US Airways recognizes and appreciates the contrib= ution of all its employees," said Andrea Rader, a US Airways spokeswoman. Shares of the carrier were down 4.5 percent at $40.21 on the New York Stock= Exchange.=20 =C2=A9 Reuters 2006. All Rights Reserved. =20 Roger & Amanda La France
