NEW YORK, Aug. 1 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Transport Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO today filed a petition with the National Mediation Board to conduct a representational election among the 7,000 Fleet Service workers at Continental Airlines.
TWU's International Secretary Treasurer John J. Kerrigan said that the union filed the petition with an overwhelming majority of signed authorization cards. He said that between 80 and 85 percent of the workers at Continental's three main hubs -- Newark, Houston and Cleveland -- had signed cards indicating their desire for TWU representation.
TWU currently represents more than 60,000 airline workers, including the Fleet Service workers at American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and American Eagle Airlines.
The National Mediation Board requires signed authorization from 35 percent of the workers to grant an election.
TWU fell 304 votes short in an election for this employee group this time last year. Mediation Board rules require than 50 percent plus 1 of the workers must vote in the election for a union to be certified. National Labor Relations Board rules require that only a majority of those voting is necessary for certification.
Since last year's setback, said Kerrigan, "the union's In House Organizing Committee (of Continental Fleet Service workers) has more than tripled, and is working very hard to win this time around."
Kerrigan expressed "great confidence" that the union would be victorious this time around.
