Of the 5,903 ballots cast, 3,266 voted against the proposal and 2,637 voted= for it, the AFA said. The rejection gives Northwest the opportunity to imp= ose new terms unilaterally on the workers. The flight attendants have threa= tened to strike if the airline voids their current contract. AFA interim president Mollie Reiley said in statement that the union would = like to resume contract negotiations with Northwest but it is prepared to d= isrupt airline service through intermittent strikes. A spokesman for Northwest was not immediately available for comment. Northwest says it needs to cut its total labor costs by $1.4 billion a year= . The carrier has reached agreements with its other unionized work groups.= =20 =C2=A9 Reuters 2006. All Rights Reserved. =20 Roger & Amanda La France
