[-] Text [+] CHICAGO, July 31 (Reuters) - Flight attendants at bankrupt Nor=
thwest Airlines (NWACQ.PK: Quote, Profile, Research) rejected a tentative l=
abor deal that would have cut the airline's labor costs by $195 million a y=
ear, the Association of Flight Attendants said on Monday.
Of the 5,903 ballots cast, 3,266 voted against the proposal and 2,637 voted=
for it, the AFA said. The rejection gives Northwest the opportunity to imp=
ose new terms unilaterally on the workers. The flight attendants have threa=
tened to strike if the airline voids their current contract.
AFA interim president Mollie Reiley said in statement that the union would =
like to resume contract negotiations with Northwest but it is prepared to d=
isrupt airline service through intermittent strikes.
A spokesman for Northwest was not immediately available for comment.
Northwest says it needs to cut its total labor costs by $1.4 billion a year=
. The carrier has reached agreements with its other unionized work groups.=
