Senate committee blocks foreign control of airlines
CO today released the following statement from Jeff in response to the Sena=
te Appropriations Committee vote on the Transportation, Treasury, Housing a=
nd Urban Development Appropriations bill for FY 2007:
=E2=80=9CContinental welcomes the Senate Appropriations Committee=E2=80=99s=
action to block the Department of Transportation from implementing its fla=
wed rulemaking on foreign control of U.S. airlines.
=E2=80=9CToday the Senate Appropriations Committee voted three to one to pr=
ohibit the Department of Transportation from using appropriated funds to fi=
nalize or implement its proposed rulemaking on foreign control, just as the=
House did, voting two to one, in June.
=E2=80=9CBoth the Senate and the House have expressed strong bipartisan opp=
osition to DOT=E2=80=99s rulemaking proposal, which would unlawfully give f=
oreign investors the right to control U.S. airlines. The message has never =
been clearer that Congress will stop the Department of Transportation from =
implementing its foreign control rulemaking.=E2=80=9D
