County leaders recently summoned the District Attorney to look at accounting irregularities at the airport, a general aviation facility. Before that, Solano County reneged on a Caltrans grant to build more hangars at the Nut Tree, despite the fact that pilots were eagerly signing on to a waiting list. But this week, the Solano County Board of Supervisors might have charted a course for more success at the county-operated facility. A $2.9 million apron reconstruction project, which would allow larger jet-powered aircraft to use the airport's runway, will be put out to bid, the board agreed Tuesday. The sweetest part of the deal, for the county at least, is that precious few funds will come out its own revenues. The Federal Aviation Administration could pay for up to 95 percent of the project. Federal earmarks for the project already total $1.8 million. The FAA requires a 5 percent match to complete the project, however, the county can apply to the state's Department of Transportation for almost all of that amount, according to a county report. The county's cost for the project could amount to $7,250. The apron reconstruction project could be completed by the late fall, wrote Andrew Swanson, the airport's manager.
