I would agree with you on one point and disagree with you on another.

I'm a Gold Medallion on Delta and fly BOS-DTW over 60 times per year on
Northwest. I have always been able to access the priority seats when I
check in at the airport or online.

You are right about upgrades however; Delta and Northwest do not upgrade
each others elite members. With that said, I have asked at the gate
before with my gold card and boarding pass and have been upgraded about
25% of the time on Northwest.

They can use their NW WorldPerks numbers instead of DL.  Just have them=20
call DL and give them the number.  One thing to note, if they have any=20
status on NW, i.e. gold/platinum etc. they will not be able to use this=20
for preferred seating/upgrades etc. somethign the airlines don't tell
you!
