American, Eastern, and Delta

On 1/1/1989, a friend was moved off AA - ROC-ORD-LAS because of nasty
weather in ORD. He was rerouted on Eastern ROC-ATL, then to Delta
ATL-MSY-DFW-LAS (All same plane/flight number). Any idea why this was
done? My airline memory doesn't stretch that far, but from what I read,
Eastern and Delta weren't the best of friends, and American wasn't
thrilled with either, so why did they push him onto that strange
itinerary? If it matters, it was a Sunday.

Thanks for any insight!
