Military officials told CBC that an eyewitness reported a low-flying aircraft appeared to be in distress and that it might have crashed in the waters near Pocologan. Military, RCMP and Transport Canada officials reported no missing aircraft. A coast guard cutter, a Hercules aircraft and a Cormorant helicopter from Canadian Forces Base Greenwood were sent to the area around Pennfield, about 60 kilometres west of Saint John. Officials at CFB Greenwood said that they were staging a military exercise in the area and that witnesses could have mistaken flares for smoke and flames.
