American applied Friday for a broad exemption to start new services =
between any U.S. point and any U.K. destination except London Heathrow =
and Gatwick.=20

The application was described as a simple "housekeeping measure" to =
allow the carrier "flexibility to inaugurate new services as market =
conditions warrant, without regulatory delay," American said.=20

In support of its application, American cited other U.S. carriers, such =
as Continental, Delta and United, with the same authority.=20

American has pending a request to start nonstop service between New York =
and Newcastle (DAILY, July 29).
