Legislation would lift restrictions on Dallas' Love Field (07/22/2005)By Michael Milligan
WASHINGTON -- Prohibitions on certain commercial air service at Love Field airport in Dallas would be lifted under a bill introduced in the Senate.

The bill (S. 1424) is co-sponsored by Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) and Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa). It has been referred to the Senate Commerce Committee.

?If enacted, competition at DFW will increase significantly,? said Inhofe as he introduced the bill on the Senate floor. ?This will be good for consumers, and it will be good for communities that used DFW [Dallas/Fort Worth airport] as their access to the world.?

The restrictions at Love Field date to a 26-year-old law, referred to as the Wright Amendment, that limits nonstop flights from Love Field within Texas and to its four surrounding states.

Originally designed to help foster the growth of DFW, the Wright Amendment, its detractors contend, limit Love Field-based low-fare carriers? ability to compete for the Dallas/Fort Worth travel market.

Southwest Airlines, which flies out of Love Field, has been aggressively lobbying Congress to repeal the Wright Amendment.
