Continental Continues To See Significant Loss For '05

Tuesday June 7, 2:30 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--Continental Airlines Inc. (CAL) said Tuesday it continues to expect a significant loss for the year 2005 because of high fuel costs.

The U.S. air carrier said in a document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission that its revenue trends have been improving and it expects cargo, mail and other revenue will be about $235 million for the second quarter.

The company said its mainline advanced bookings though mid-July are "a bit softer" than last year, but it said it expects the second-quarter load factors for most regions to be stronger than last year because a larger percentage of its customers are booking closer to their travel date this year.

Continental Airlines in March reached agreements on new contracts covering its pilots, mechanics and technicians, which are expected to deliver about $418 million in annual cost savings. The company said it expects to realize about $90 million of these savings in the second quarter and about $300 million for the full year 2005.

The company also said it expects an unrestricted cash and short-term investment balance of between $2 billion and $2.1 billion by the end of the second quarter.
