NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Boeing Co. (BA) received an order from a Singapore aircraft leasing company for 20 next-generation 737s and the purchase rights for 20 additional airplanes in a deal worth $1.1 billion.

This is the first direct order of 737s by Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise and is the largest jetliner purchase by a leasing company since Sept. 11, 2001, said Boeing in a press release Wednesday. Deliveries will begin in late 2006 and extend through late 2009.

Singapore Aicraft Leasing specified the Boeing 737-800 as the baseline model for its order, but the agreement provides for conversions to the 737-700 or the higher-capacity 737-900X.

Previously, Singapore Aircraft Leasing has ordered six Boeing 777s and three Boeing 767s. The leasing company also owns a number of Boeing jetliners purchased through other sources.

Singapore Aircraft Leasing is jointly owned by four shareholders, according to the company's Website. Singapore Airlines and German bank WestLB each hold 35.5% of the company, while Singapore government investment agencies Temasek Holdings and GIC each have a 14.5% stake.
