Six people were transported to the hospital with injuries, said Pat Hogan, spokesman for the Metropolitan Airports Commission. He did not know the extent of their injuries. Northwest Airlines also released a statement saying several crew members were injured, but no passengers were hurt. The incident happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hogan said the DC-9 flying in from Columbus, Ohio, had landed without incident and was taxiing to its gate when it apparently lost control of steering. The plane collided with a Northwest Airbus that was backing away from a gate for takeoff to San Antonio, Texas. Passengers on both planes were evacuated, Hogan said. The escape slide on the Airbus had been deployed. After the crash, the DC-9 appeared to be partially lodged underneath the Airbus. The top of the DC-9's cockpit area made contact with the Airbus' wing and was damaged. Hogan said the National Transportation Safety Board was investigating, and the planes could not be moved until investigators arrived. The planes were not affecting other air traffic.
