The actual name of the occurrence escapes me but IIRC if you took several
frequencies in relatively close proximity, added them together and then
divided by the number of frequencies.  The resultant answer (Frequency
average) could flasely radiate?? the signal.  I saw occurrences of this when
I was a controller.  You had to have the same frequencies (transmitters) in
use at the same time for it to occur.  If we changed to a backup transmitter
(All controllers have them) the situation stopped.  IIRC since the primary
and the backup each had it's own antenna it was resolved by swapping
transmitter locations.  Hence problem basically resolved.  This sounds
similar.
