I think AA is probably the smartest of the really hard hit legacy carriers. While CO and NW have remained a bit insolated because of their unique networks and good management, AA has been one of those hardest hit by competition. They are realizing that they cannot duke it out, especially with the pulling back of the money losing JFK-LGB route, and are trying to refocus on their strengths.
