The railroad was taken over by the government as Conrail, with no compensation to the stockholders, but the corporation survived. Most people didn't remember that the corporation owned a lot of valuable real estate. Grand Central and Pennsylvania Stations in New York City are examples. The stock, which had sold for pennies during the bankruptcy sold for dollars later. I doubt if any airlines have similar prospects.
