Alitalia Sees $643 Million Loss This Year

October 18, 2004
 By BLOOMBERG NEWS

Alitalia, Italy's largest airline, is expecting a loss this
year of about 515 million euros ($643 million), in line
with 2003.

The loss before taxes and extraordinary items will be "not
dissimilar" to that of last year, Alitalia said in a
statement distributed Saturday by the Italian stock
exchange.

The statement was in response to a request from the market
regulator Consob for a clarification of the airline's
outlook. The company lost 520 million euros before
extraordinary items in 2003. Alitalia said it would soon
receive the first part of a 400 million euro loan
guaranteed by the Italian government.

Alitalia is setting aside 289 million euros to pay for the
elimination of 3,700 jobs, or about 20 percent of its
employees, as well as for splitting the company into two
units. The chief executive, Giancarlo Cimoli, plans to cut
1 billion euros in costs over the next four years and add
new planes in a bid to return to profit after four years of
operating losses.

Mr. Cimoli plans to split Alitalia into a business called
AZ Fly for flight operations and one for ground services
and handling, to be named AZ Servizi. The group's debt will
be left with AZ Fly, the airline said.

Mr. Cimoli's business plan sets a goal of breaking even in
2006 and then expanding by buying 7 long-haul and 12
medium-haul planes by 2008. Alitalia plans to increase its
market share in Italy, which has fallen to 43 percent this
year from 66 percent in 2002, and add routes to South
America, China and Eastern Europe.
