Considering the relative reputations of the two airlines, they would be best off if they kept the Alaska Airlines identity. As far as coverage goes, AS/US is probably one of the better merger ideas I've heard. As clay noted, AS is big on the west coast and US is big on the east coast. Both have limited transcontinental service, but combined and aligned to the relative hubs (SEA, PDX, CLT, PIT) it would probably work reasonably well. Would never happen though.
