On Friday, I logged my 100th flight in a DC-9, predictably on an NW DC-9 Minneapolis-Detroit. Since my first flight on a DC-9 in July, 1977 (SAS, Madrid-Copenhagen), I've logged 87 flights on NW DC-9s, five on USAir / USAirways, three on SAS, two on ValuJet, plus one each on Hawaiian, Spirit, and Midwest Express. I've flown on every variant of the DC-9 except the limited production -20 (although the MD-80, MD-90, and 717 are based on the DC-9, I log these aircraft under their own names). Nearly 52,500 miles of great flying on DC-9s! On the trip that enabled me to log my first DC-9, I also flew on a Northwest 747-100, an Iberia 747 (variant unknown), two Iberia 727-200s, an SAS DC-8-63, and an American DC-10-10. Who would have guessed in 1977 that 26 years later, the 747-100, 727-200, and DC-10-10 would be very seldom used in passenger service by the major airlines, but the DC-9 would continue to be going strong, at least in the USA? Thank you, Douglas for building a great airplane. Hopefully, I'll continue to log DC-9s for many, many years to come! Joe Wolf
