US Airways to unveil new hub Knight Ridder Newspapers Published Monday, August 23, 2004 MIAMI - US Airways is expected to announce today plans to create an international hub at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and nearly quintuple the number of destinations it serves from there, two aviation sources say. The move would create the first such hub at Fort Lauderdale, elevating the status of an airport already among the fastest growing in the nation - while providing more competition for Miami International Airport. Financially struggling US Airways would likely begin new nonstop service to 15 cities from Fort Lauderdale, including flights to Latin America and the Caribbean, the Northeast and Florida, the sources said. The airline, which now offers 16 daily flights from Fort Lauderdale to four destinations, would use Fort Lauderdale to connect passengers from its domestic flights to international destinations. US Airways spokesman David Castelveter would not confirm or deny the plans Friday. "We see real opportunities for US Airways to bring service to the Caribbean, Mexico and South America from Florida," he said. Roger EWROPS
