Continental To Recall At Least 240 Pilots By Spring

Thursday August 12, 1:23 PM EDT

HOUSTON (Dow Jones)--Continental Airlines Inc. (CAL) will recall at least 240 pilots from furlough by the middle of next spring.

The airline said pilot recalls are expected to occur at the rate of about 30 per month, the maximum feasible number given the company's available training facilities. In a press release, Continental said it has recalled 197 pilots since January.

There are currently 436 Continental pilots on furlough.

Continental shares recently traded at $8.36, up one penny, or 0.1%.

A Continental spokeswoman told Dow Jones Newswires that most of the pilots being recalled were laid off in downsizing that took place in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks. The spokeswoman said the recalls announced on Thursday are intended to support the airlines' 2005 flying schedule. She declined to provide specific information on when other pilots on furlough might be recalled.
