HONOLULU -- A man was arrested Sunday at Honolulu International Airport after trying to take a blasting cap aboard a flight to the mainland.

State Department of Transportation spokesman Scott Ishikawa said the cap that could be used as part of a training grenade was detected in the man's carryon luggage by scanning equipment before he boarded ATA Flight 754 to Los Angeles.

Ishikawa said airport officials were also suspicious of the man because he had bought a one-way ticket with cash. He said the man was taken to the federal detention center, and the blasting cap was turned over to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

A call seeking comment from the Honolulu office of the FBI wasn't immediately returned.

Ishikawa said airport operations and flights were unaffected by the incident.
