Coleman, who was in charge of cutting staffing costs after the Sept. 11 attacks, is the third top executive to resign from the airline in the last two months. In March, Virgin USA hired Delta president Fred Reid to lead the formati= on of a new budget carrier in the United States. And earlier this month, current CFO Michele Burns said she was leaving Delta for another Atlanta-based company, the bankrupt energy supplier Mirant Corp. Delta's former chief executive, Leo Mullin, stepped down from that position at the end of last year and was replaced by Gerald Grinstein. Delta also has lost its lead labor negotiator, Terry Erskine, who recently announced he is retiring. The nation's third-largest airline announced a new CFO to replace Burns = on Friday. Michael Palumbo, an airline industry consultant in New York, will start May 11. Palumbo was not available for comment, a Delta spokesman said. The compa= ny released a statement in which Palumbo said he was "certain that we can restore profitability at Delta and regain its proper place in the industry." Shares in Delta fell 8 cents to $6.27 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
