the $50-100 you're trying to save probably won't be worth the aggrevation. it may be worth it when making an intl connection, but there's numerous options from a single carrier domestically that interline conx are not worth the effort.

LAX is not well designed for connections, especially interline connections.

There is no special line for security.  Unless United Express in TUS is
able to issue your America West boarding pass, you will have to check in
with America West in LAX.  If you have an e-ticket, you could try using
America West's web check in before you leave home, or use a kiosk at
LAX.  Your bags should transfer fine, just make sure the United agent
knows about your America West connection and tags your bags appropriately.
