It's also not a direct conversion since conductors aren't the "pilots".

Locomotive engineers make between $60K and $47K, with those who make
distance runs making more. $47K is the money yard switching engineers
make, and that is going away with remote operation. BLET, the union
that serves BNSF and UP has been very agin remote operation, but the
other union (which I think is UTU) is in favor of it. As with most
technology, I'd expect the union to lose in the long run.

Conductors make $40K, and it doesn't require actually knowing how to
operate a train.
