Re: AA Pilot Terrifies Passengers

I'm definitely with Baha here.

But to bring the issue back to the AA captain, and relevant to this
list, the reason that this is a major incident for which the captain
should be disciplined is not because he used his role and power over
the passengers to proselytize for his religion -- that's definitely
offensive, but a more minor offense in the scheme of things -- but that
his comments provoked fear among his passengers in a time when the
security aspects of flying make any journey very stressful. (Not to
mention lost luggage - UA or SkyWest managed to misplace mine yesterday
afternoon transiting DEN, but they managed to find it again and deliver
it out.)

I would definitely have been frightened or put on edge by a question
about who on a flight is a Christian. The first thing I would think of
is that he intends to crash the plane and has some idea that Christians
will be "saved" while others will perish - or at least wants to make
people think that. Or that he is one of those armed pilots and there
is going to be some sort of incident. I'm by no means sure of the
"rules of engagement" here, but if I had been an Air Marshal I think I
would have hit the panic button and have him removed from the flight
pending an investigation. (Uh.. this was before takeoff, right? :-))

I am by no means one of those airline-security fearmongers that run TSA
and DHS and so forth, but it would have disturbed me enough to take
action. I don't think it's enough to terminate an otherwise
(presumably) good pilot's career, but he needs to be sat down and told
exactly why he will never, never, do that again.
