Anyone catch this? Okay, they already have on their agenda 1.1B in new regional jet acquisitions already on the agenda. This $4B is AFTER that. Air Canada has a healthy fleet of A319/320/321s (admittedly some of the 320s are a tad older, but it doesn't make 'em wrong.) Then it has a mix of 340s and 330s. (once again some of the 340s are reaching 10 years, but it doesn't make 'em wrong.) Other than a few older 767-200s, their 767-300s are mostly young, some almost brand-new. ...their 747s are on the way out. (and we'll ignore the few 737s) So, I can see the purchase of a few 767-200ER type long range low-mid capacity wide-bodies, but what else? This is from an airlines that espouses the regional jet as the future, and also properly maintained a modest fleet of DC9s for many years past their stylish years to provide a low-cost reliable plane. And who's causing the almost meteoric decline in AC's revenues (which they STILL blame on SARS)? Westjet using some of the same 737-200s that came from Pacific Western (which begat Canadian Airlines which begat Air Canada), and Jetsgo which are running early 80's MD-83s quite happily. Makes your head spin.
