said on Tuesday it had been chosen by Lufthansa (LHAG) to convert five
MD-11 planes into freighters for the German airline's cargo operations,
the world's sixth largest.
Slowing demand for new commercial planes has made conversion work on
freighters and air tankers a key focus at both Boeing and its European
rival, EADS (EAD

) unit Airbus.
A Boeing spokesman said the contract was worth $55 million.
Lufthansa is standardising its cargo fleet and using MD-11s to replace
Boeing 747-200 jumbo jets.
The conversions will begin next June and be delivered between December
and February 2005, Boeing said in a statement.
Boeing Commercial Aviation Services will engineer and oversee the work,
which will be done in Singapore by SASCO, a subsidiary of Singapore
Technologies Aerospace Ltd, the world's largest independent aircraft
maintenance firm.
The government-linked firm is a unit of Southeast Asia's largest defence
conglomerate, ST Engineering Ltd (STEG).=20
